Teeccino Celebrates Ten Years
In 1995, Teeccino was launched at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California. This March, after a three year absence, we returned to the show to celebrate our tenth year anniversary. With two new product lines to introduce and our domination of the coffee alternatives category, we were ready to party!
Data collected by Spins, the leading provider of sales tracking information for the natural foods industry, shows that in 2004, sales of Teeccino were 48% of the coffee alternatives market, up from 34% in 2003. Additionally, Teeccino contributed 85% of the positive dollar growth in the category. Our nearest competitor only had an 18% share of the category and only two other brands contributed slightly more than 5% each to the positive dollar growth of the category. Clearly we were in a celebrating mood!
As many of you know, I’ve created many lines of herbal teas for other companies, most of which we sell here on the website. I think it is time for a new line of herbal coffee!
Over the years, many coffee drinkers have requested an unsweetened version of Teeccino. Even the small amounts of dates and figs in Java are too much for coffee drinkers who want their coffee more bitter. Additionally, we have many requests for organic herbal coffee, but the dates and figs used in Teeccino aren’t available as certified organic from our processors even though they are organically grown!
With those two requirements in mind, I’ve designed a new herbal coffee line based on a nutritious nut gathered in the rainforest that was a staple food of the Mayan civilization. The Ramon nut, as the Spanish called it, or “Yaxox”, as it was called by the Maya meaning “Corn tree”, is high in a complete protein just like soy and rich in minerals like calcium and potassium. The Maya ate it like corn and potatoes and they stored it underground to help prevent famine if other crops failed. Roasted, it tastes distinctively like coffee!
Our Maya Herbal Coffee line should be ready to ship in June and you’ll hear about its availability from this newsletter first! Keep your taste buds anticipating the moment they’ll be able to savor the three new Maya flavors: Maya Caffé, the closet flavor to regular coffee yet, Maya Chai, for those of us who love stimulating spices, and Maya Mocha with a hint of chili pepper just the way the Maya loved their chocolate!
Keep your fingers crossed with us for the second product line! We’re hoping to accomplish putting Teeccino into pods that can be brewed just like tea bags or used in pod machines. Right now, Teeccino is on its way to Italy to see if the Italian machine manufacturer can help us overcome some technical difficulties of getting Teeccino to run on a machine designed for coffee!
Think how great it will be to be able to enjoy a cup of Teeccino wherever you go! Pods will solve the convenience problem we all experience when we want a cup of Teeccino when we’re out and about. We’re determined to make this a reality so we’ll keep you posted when we’re successful!
